RSS files provide news updates from websites
in a simple form for your computer.

Once information is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

You read these files in a program called an aggregator or news reader which collects news from various websites and provides it to you in a simple form.
