Stove Types and Fuel

Coal Burning Stoves

Coal, Coke or smokeless fuel burns best on a raised grate which allows air to reach the underside of the fuel. They have a riddling mechanism to shake the ash into the removable ash can.

Wood Burning Stoves

Wood burns best on a flat bed of ash. Wood burning stoves tend to be grateless and have no ashpan. With wood fuel it is the moisture content that decides the heat output and so it should be properly seasoned or it will be hard to light. It will also give off more creosote which will build up in your chimney.

Softwoods like fir or pine can be dry enough after one year to burn well but this is not enough for hardwoods such as oak!

Wood burning stoves are invariably side loading to allow large sizes of wood to be put in.

This means that there must be at least 6 inches clearance for the door to open.

Coal comes in small lumps which can fed in from the top occasionally the front. To burn coal or coke in a wood burning stove an extra grate with large holes is required. This will allow air flow to the bottom of the fuel.

Multifuel Stoves

Multifuel stoves can burn coal, smokeless fuel as well as wood. They have a grate with smaller holes in as a compromise and a riddling mechanism to shake the ash into the ash can.

Wood pellets

Wood Pellets, made from sawdust, are a new fuel to the UK. They are a very clean and environmentally friendly wood fuel cut into short lengths that burn quickly with a intense flame.

Pure sawdust and wood shavings from sawmills is dried and then pressed. The lignin contained in the wood acts as a glue binding the sawdust into briquettes or pellets.

The ash from pellets and heat logs which is rich in minerals can be recycled to fertilise forests, parks or gardens.

The pellets are designed to be burned in specially designed pellet stoves which are fed from a hopper via a worm-drive.Pellet stoves are not currently a major part of the stove market in the UK but are popular in the rest of Europe and America.

The wood pellet fuel costs £5.85 per 16kg bag inc vat @5% although this price would fall for deliveries of 1 tonne or more.

Heat Logs

Heat Logs are made from pure sawdust shavings with no gluing agents or contaminated wood. This makes Heat Logs a very clean and environmentally friendly wood fuel ideal for burning on any wood burning or multi-fuel stove, as well as directly on open fireplaces.

They are easy to handle and store and will last indefinitely if stored dry. They are easy to light, have a very effective heat release, are long lasting and burn cleanly with a low ash residue.
