1920s Walnut MantelThe simplicity of the design of this fireplace surround allows the beauty of the bookmatched walnut frieze to be displayed to full effect. Above the spectacular frieze is a narrow carved band of a wave pattern There is a geometric moulding around the fire opening set on plain block feet, the whole piece being finished with a plain flat top. The mantel was originally installed in a house on Broadway in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Condition: VERY GOOD Overall Width 57 inches ( cm )

1920s Oak Mantel with a large mirrorAn elegant 1920s fire surround whose main feature is the large bolection moulding that frames the whole piece. The moulding starts from simple, block feet continues to the top of the legs and across the header where a central plaque with carved edges adds a focal point. Within this framework the recessed fire opening is formed from plain fillets with a horizontal moulded strip above. A narrow frieze section is topped by a bowed central shelf which has a large mirror in the recessed panel above it. Condition: EXCELLENT Overall Width 51 inches ( cm )

Late 1930s Mahogany MantelA splendid, late 1930s mantel in mahogany with scalloped shoulders and a central raised platform shelf decorated with intricate moulded details. The fireplace opening has a shallow arched top framed with a small bolection. The corners of this moulding are circumscribed cross mouldings (a cross with a circle round it). The whole outer shape of the mantel is skillfully framed with a moulded strip. Condition: VERY GOODOverall Width 58.75 inches ( cm )

1930s Oak Mantel with recessed friezeA 1930s oak mantel with a lowered central frieze section. The frieze is doubly stepped down and back from the top of the plain legs. A band of zig-zag decoration with a central diamond is the sole ornamentation. The plain simple geometry of this mantel is typical of its era allowing the beauty of the medullary ray figuring in the wood to show through. (Medullary rays are radial sheets or ribbons extending vertically through the tree across and perpendicular to the growth rings. Also called pith rays or wood rays, these formations of primarily parenchyma cells allow the radial transmission of sap. In quartersawn material, where the wood is cut into boards with the growth rings roughly perpendicular to the face of the board, the medullary rays often produce beautiful figure such as silver grain, medullary spots and pith flecks) Condition: VERY GOOD Overall Width 49.5 inches ( 125.73 cm )

An imposing, angular design with geometric banding to the top. The upper tier has two flat panels around a central concave panel in fiddle back veneer. They are topped with interlocking applied beading rising to a central chamfered pinnacle. The bottom section in straight grained mahogany has chamfered sides which sweeps down onto solid block feet. The feet have been cut to accomodate a 48 inch wide hearth at a thickness of 2 inches. The fireplace opening has substantial moulding running around it. Condition: EXCELLENT Sizes |

The central block of the frieze is in Burr Walnut with a hand carved pattern of leaves and flowers that blends to the moulding around the fireplace opening.
