1930s Oak Mantel with recessed frieze

A 1930s oak mantel with a lowered central frieze section.

The frieze is doubly stepped down and back from the top of the plain legs.

A band of zig-zag decoration with a central diamond is the sole ornamentation.

The plain simple geometry of this mantel is typical of its era allowing the beauty of the medullary ray figuring in the wood to show through. (Medullary rays are radial sheets or ribbons extending vertically through the tree across and perpendicular to the growth rings. Also called pith rays or wood rays, these formations of primarily parenchyma cells allow the radial transmission of sap. In quartersawn material, where the wood is cut into boards with the growth rings roughly perpendicular to the face of the board, the medullary rays often produce beautiful figure such as silver grain, medullary spots and pith flecks)
