Edwardian Mantel in Oak

A tall Edwardian Fireplace mantel in Oak with a central circular mirror. This mantelpiece from before the first world war piece has stylistic references to both the Arts and Crafts movement and to the Classical revival that replaced much of the Art Nouveau style at the turn of the 20th century.

Manufactured to a high standard in oak, the mantelpiece has moulded edging to the fire opening. This is echoed by a raised moulding set back from the opening starting centrally on the foot blocks and finishing at a cartouche with applique swag and bow detail. Above the cartouche a moulded bow fronted shelf separates the overmantel section.

The jambs extend upwards at either side of the overmantel and have carved decoration with a cross motif. The circular mirror is mounted in a square panel with cross corner quartered veneer to match the carved motifs of the jambs. The panel is recessed by two angled panels and topped with a bowed pelmet to echo the shape of the central shelf. The whole piece is topped with a double depth moulded shelf.

The original insert for this surround was most probably a 'canopy on legs' with angled tile panels to either side, the tiles possibly decorated in a similar manner to the cross motif and with a swag or similar on the cast iron hood.

Edwardian Mahogany Mantel

A tall, elegant mahogany fire surround c.1910. Above the plain central shelf is a recessed frieze, framed with moulding to either side and detailed fretwork across the top, into which is set the oval bevelled edge mirror.

The fireplace opening is simple, the plain legs end in block feet but the top shelf has a double moulded edge all round.

The central shelf is bracketless with ogee moulded edges
(consisting, going from low to high, of a concave arc flowing into a convex arc, with vertical ends).

Classically inspired Edwardian Mantel

A finely crafted mantel Edwardian mantel with has free standing columns rise from extended foot blocks and supporting the deep moulded top shelf on turned capitols.

The opening is framed by a raised mitred mouldings above which is a small central shelf upported by two moulded brackets and three panelled frieze with an intricately carved central section with hand carved acanthus leaf decoration.

Edwardian Style Mantelpiece

An unusual reproduction Edwardian style of mantelpiece (made in the 1980s) with embossed leaf details to the leg panels.

The legs are topped by ornate bullseyes at either end of a frieze with a central urn and decorative swags.

The fireplace opening is surrounded with egg and dart moulding and the whole piece topped with a deep shelf.

Edwardian Mahogany Mantel

A beautiful Edwardian mahogany mantel with van Eyck overmantel mirror . The mantel features multiple stepped pillasters with a variety of moulded detail and reverse tapering to them, topped with a carved oval daisy motif.

The moulding round the fire opening reflects that of the pillasters. Above this, the frieze is split into two panelled halves by the tapering central shelf support.

The ample mantel shelf is deeply moulded and set above a band of egg and dart moulding.

The mantel is topped off with an unusual overmantle piece containing its original convex mirror.

Large Edwardian Slate Mantel with Inset Tile Panels

A black laquered slate mantel in a classical style with block feet, a moulded shelf and shield shaped plaques at the top of the legs.

The main decorative features are the three tile panels incorporating their original transfer tiles with a stylised egyptian vase and flowers in the two leg panels and a matching, asymmetrical, flower pattern in the frieze.

Edwardian Style Mantel

Although a reproduction from the 1980's this pine mantel is well crafted and has been stained to a rich mahogany colour.

It has block feet with grooved legs and corbels supporting a moulded top shelf. The otherwise plain frieze has a narrow, shaped shelf with no supporting brackets.

Edwardian Mahogany Mantel

An Edwardian style mahogany mantel made in 1919 and removed from a home in Reddish, Stockport

It has moulded block feet and a moulded trim around the opening, moulded edging to the recessed mirror panel that frames the original oval bevelled edge mirror and dentil moulding under the moulded edge top shelf.

The central shelf also has a moulded edge and is shaped like a tudor arch tapering from 5.5 inches deep in the middle to 4 inches at the edges. This central shelf is supported on two unusually shaped brackets.

Edwardian Mantel with Oval Mirror

An imposing Edwardian mahogany mantel removed from a house in Withington, Manchester.

The mantel features tall banded pillasters rising full length from the block feet to a moulded top shelf.

The original oval shaped, bevelled mirror sits above a 6 inch deep central shelf supported by two elegant brackets. The finish has the rich patina of turn of the 20th century mahogany.
