Large Oak Mantel with Art Nouveau Carvings
An imposing Late Victorian mantel with Art Nouveau carving and central bevelled mirror
This mantel originated from a large terraced house in Davenport, Stockport dating from the 1890's. The whole piece is fashioned in beautifully figured Oak and would make an impressive focal point to any large high ceilinged room of that period.
The moulded block feet support half round pillasters topped with wide Corinthian capitals framing a sunken pediment capped with a moulded cornice. The inset panels follow the shape of the cornice so the two panels with carved details have concave curves at the top and the large bevelled mirror is convex at the top.
Under this 3 panelled frieze is the sweeping curve of a generous central shelf supported by three stepped ogee brackets.
At some stage the legs have been altered for a thicker than usual hearth but this can easily be accomodated either by making a hearth to the exact dimensions needed or by remedial work to the feet of the mantel.
