Cubist influenced tiled arched fireplace insert

A modernist version of the classic Clarence Arch design given a homely feel by the textures of the three different mottled glazes used on this insert

The mid-brown / orange base glaze of the background and arch tiles has a touch of darker crackle glaze giving an appearance like light tanned leather. The light and dark tiles laid in various patterns have the appearance of patinated bronze and a speckled golden granite.

The recessed frieze is split into 3 sections by 2 vertical bars of bronze REO (round edge opposite) tiles.

To either side of the bars the pattern is a simple square of bronze framed with gold finger tiles all round while in the centre the finger tiles of both colours interlock to form a grid pattern with the gold tiles predominant.

The grid pattern is repeated in a band across the insert with the pattern having been turned through right angles and the colours reversed so the bronze is the major colour.

1930s Fireplace Insert

A 1930's insert made from large moulded blocks glazed with a beige/brown
mottle. The fireplace was made by Thynne of Hereford and is typical of their glazing and styling.

It has a recessed fire opening around which are multi cloured mottled
tiles and finger details in lustre glaze.

The hearth has a raised section in front of the fire opening suggesting that it was originally intended for use with a wood burning fireback.

The curve of the arch is echoed in the curved raised kerbing to the hearth.

1920s Fireplace Insert

An extraordinary fireplace insert with
a tiled quilted effect frieze. It has a
long low arch separated from the frieze
by alternating black iridescent one inch
tiles. The detail cutting of the tiles is
exceptionally well done. The creamy
brown glaze is deliberately separated
out like oil and water and the base of
the glaze has a burgundy colour which
is only seen at the tile edge. The inside
facing tiles of the fireplace opening are
unusually deep which means that the
fire is recessed further than normal.
The 24 inch wide fireplace opening
lends itself to a basket fire or baxi system
