1950s Brick Effect Fireplace with Tudor Arch A fine example of a much maligned type of Ceramic Fireplace with many different moulded "bricks" and the natural variation in shades of fired earthenware. The hearth has a raised kerb formed from U section mouldings around the flat area made in 6 inch square earthenware tiles. The fire opening is recessed under a Tudor style arch with a keystone. Above the arch 6 inch x 1.5 inch "bricks" are cross bonded. The size of the bricks, being in keeping with Tudor originals, lends an air of authenticity. A rare and unusual 1950s complete fireplace with a unique, calligraphic motif placed asymmetrically above the fire opening. Behind the large hobs, the legs of the fireplace taper back towards the wall with three horizontal bands of double fingered tiles in the darker mottle. The top band of the legs continues as a row of zig-zag moulded blocks that curve outwards to form the base of the protruding central header section. The header is raised above the height of the legs to give a single step to either side. Central to the piece is the recessed fire opening framed with stepped blocks in the darker mottled glaze. The three piece hearth consists of two hobs and a lowered central portion in a beige/buff mottled glaze with raised kerbing across the central section in a highly variegated darker mottle. Sizes |

The feature tiles are in a darker shade as are the hearth kerbs, stepped opening blocks, hobs, decorative arch blocks and finger tiles that form a curved back to the central dropped shelf. The fireplace features stepped opening blocks and moulded ribbing in the darker mottle framing the lighter tiles and central dropped shelf. All tiled fireplace with transfer tiles Hearth width 52.5 inches A coffee and mushroom coloured all tiled fireplace with transfer printed tiles.from the late 1940s or early 1950s The fireplace and hearth are framed all round with a lightly mottled mushroom coloured tile. The main area of the hearth, a frame around the moulded opening blocks and the recessed shaped shelf at the top are in the darker coffee shade. A highly complex all tiled fireplace made by H&E Smiths of Stoke on Trent in the early 1950's. It is made with the Van Delft range of tiles with a purple heather tint and several moulded blocks in a beige/brown mottle. The fireplace is unusually deep (8 inches) and the sides and top are decorated with a band of 2 inch square Heather van Delft tiles. Starting from small block feet the whole back panel is framed with the
kerb
tiles split lengthways and a raised rib inserted at the join. The header
section has angled tile panels to either side and a central bowed panel
made The shelf separating the header from the fire opening section is supported on a row of right angled fingers similar to the narrow, horizontally laid fingers between the chamfered opening blocks. The subtle main tile colours are mottled pale grey, eggshell blue green and brown. Curved finger edging tiles match the chamfered opening blocks and the bowed canopy tiles. Inside these tiles are 8" x 6" background tiles highlighted with square black diamonds with an embossed floral motif.
