Colourful 1920s Fireplace
One of a pair of striking, colourful and rare 1920s fireplaces (see also f597) originally installed in a 1920's bungalow in Waddington, Lancashire . They would be a matching pair if they were the same size or colour.
It is made from 3 inch square glazed tiles with decorative finger tiles around the recessed opening and brass fireframe (The brass frame is a later addition hiding some minor damage to the original opening blocks). The ample hearth has a slightly raised edging in similar 3 inch tile blocks and the piece is topped with a wooden shelf.
The most interesting features are the rows of lustre glazed tiles around the finger pattern and one row beneath the shelf. Around the finger pattern tiles all the lustre blocks have embossed animal or plant images arranged at random, the lustre tiles under the shelf are all plain except for two support brackets embossed with owls.
