1950s All Tiled Fireplace
A highly complex all tiled fireplace made by H&E Smiths of Stoke on Trent in
the early 1950's.
It is made with the Van Delft range of tiles with a purple
heather
tint and several moulded blocks in a beige/brown mottle. The fireplace is
unusually deep (8 inches) and the
sides and top are decorated with a band of 2 inch square Heather van Delft
tiles.
Starting from small block feet the whole back panel is framed with the kerb
tiles split lengthways and a raised rib inserted at the join. The header
section has angled tile panels to either side and a central bowed panel made
from edge glazed finger tiles only 0.375 inches wide.
The shelf separating
the header from the fire opening section is supported on a row of right
angled fingers similar to the narrow, horizontally laid fingers between the
chamfered opening blocks. The hearth has a
raised kerb made from these blocks with square bosses at the corners.
