Late 1940s Tiled fireplace
An early post-war tiled fireplace of rare design with a wealth of subtle
detail. The two main tile colours are a straw/beige mottle and a darker veined
mottle which is used in both the fireplace and the hearth.
The fireplace has an unusual
double "tile on a
tile" step back to the legs and a raised central block as a shelf. It has a
bowed frieze formed by zig-zag patterned blocks at the bottom surmounted by
fingers with a ziggurat pattern around a central cartouche of a moulded block
embossed with a swirling pattern.
The opening tiles are in the darker mottle and are in the form
of chamfered blocks. The hearth is in the darker mottle with an integral kerb
in the lighter shade.
