The All Night Burner is a combination of fireplace fret, grate, bars, ashpan and tool that enable fires to burn brightly when needed and slowly overnight, never going out.

All Night Burners were an advance in coal burning appliances designed around the standard clay milner fireback that had become the norm by the 1920s.

The All Night Burner works by giving much more control over the air intake to the fuel. An adjustable draught underneath the grate allowed the main flow of combustion air to be regulated. It also housed an ashpan to collect all the ash. A simple tool both to remove the ashpan and regulate the draught was common.

The All Night Burner also features a drop down front which covers the front fireplace bars. This allows the flow of oxygen to the front and top of the coal or solid fuel to be regulated.

With both the bottom open allowing air flow to the bottom of the grate and the front dropped down the fire will roar away radiating heat into the room

At night the front is raised up and the air to the undergrate at the bottom is shut down completely. If the fire is then banked up fully it will burn away slowly for about 15 hours using a quality fuel. For complete safety a fireguard should be in place at night.

With little or no maintenance beyond the regular removal of ash (once a day is sufficient) these fires can be run all winter without ever going out.

All night burners are easily installed in any existing 16" or 18" clay milner fireback set up for solid fuel and come with a full set of instructions.

Excellent modern smokeless coals were developed by the coal board in the 1950 and 1960s which perform brilliantly in these grates. Smokeless fuel such as Excel, Homefire Ovals or Supertherm nuggets are widely available

During the winter of 1995/96 the all night burner was costed by us using Excel small eggs at £2.80 per 24 hour period making this continuous heating a very economic proposition
